I am delighted to invite you to my upcoming exhibition, CONTENT: learning about pleasure. The show which is part of Deptford X fringe will preview on Wednesday 26th September 2018 and continue until Saturday the 29th September.
Immersive video installations and large-scale photographs work together in this show to address notions of synthetic experience. Drawing on varied visual sources, the work questions the unconscious processes at work when we read images and what implications they may have on our pleasure, attention and agency.
The photographs, of fleshy human bodies immersed in sensual experiences, are shot using a robotic camera. They show us a perspective not possible with human vision. It is a perspective that is not even photographic; only becoming visible once images are fused and manipulated by the algorithms of the software. The resulting images feel uncanny, being both close to human experience in detail and texture, but also impossible and inhuman in their dimensions.
The video installations look at how algorithms are learning about human pleasure and how to manipulate it through the content we upload and engage with. Using found videos that generate physiological bodily responses, the work asks us to be both hyper aware and critical of the mechanisms being used, while also forcing us to surrender to the simulated pleasures on offer.
The machine is learning about our pleasure and we are mesmerised.
