[April 2013-New York, NY] The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is pleased to present London-based photographer Jacob Love’s STATES on view twenty four hours a day in the street level Wooster St. Window Gallery located at 26 Wooster Street, New York City. The exhibition opens with a reception at the Museum from 6-8 pm on April 26, 2013 and runs through June 21, 2013.
STATES, a work in progress, is part of an ongoing project of landscapes and portraits initially inspired by the utopian scenes printed in the Jehovah’s Witness magazine, The Watchtower. They were taken during Love’s travels through 15 US states and parts of Canada over the last 3 years.
Love’s landscapes depict the same continental landmass photographed in different physical states of being, suggesting that the only consistent truth is change. Even the most solid and permanent aspect of our realities, the ground under our feet, the landscape that sustains us, is in constant change. Through inverting landscapes, they cease to be “a place” and become a “no place” existing in our minds rather than in concrete reality.
In his portraits, figures emerge from darkness, re-enforcing the idea that to come out as “queer” is not a single act that positions a subject as being different “in relation” to something else, but a continual emotional, spiritual and psychological process that celebrates the notion of differentiation, singularity and uniqueness of being. In presenting difference in and of itself, Love claims “queer” as an identification with difference.
Jacob Love completed his MA at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2008 and has exhibited in London, Paris and Berlin. A book of his previous work Line of Flight was published in 2010. Love teaches photography at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Work exhibited Wooster St. Window Gallery is on view to the public twenty-four hours a day and speaks to the LGBTQ experience showing art that might be denied access to mainstream venues due to subject matter or institutional bias. Exhibitions are of high aesthetic quality or of significant cultural importance. This gallery offers subject matter that may be provocative but not explicit and may be historic or contemporary work from emerging and established artists.
