Work in progress (working project title: CONTENT)
This video piece is a single channel projection onto a screen encrusted with the same holographic glitter and rhinestones found in the source video. Constructed by overlaying multiple copies of a one hour-long ASMR Slime video. ‘How to make slime’ was one of the most searched terms of 2017. Slime offers a different physical experience from touching and swiping a glass device. The sounds, textures and smells of slime offer up a more diverse and varied physical reality to those whose lives are lived through the screen of a device. It is sensation devoid of context made manifest. The weirdness of some of the ASMR slime videos is that they are not instructional videos on how to make slime, but rather are a stand in for the experience of slime, which is a stand in for a life IRL.
I have used various different levels of repetition, mirroring and symmetry in both videos. This is done to emphasise the visual pleasure of the videos over the cognitive meaning. The images become abstract yet lose none of their power. Our bodies ability to be affected remains.
